Today we had Mr. Nguyen over as our guest speaker. He went over how to write our speech and how to choose a topic, and later we turned to practicing impromptu and getting tips for it.
The key thing for choosing a topic is find something you're familiar with or can relate to. In order to create a good speech, you should be able to manipulate the topic into an abstract form. For example, if you're going to talk about an apple, you can talk about it's appearance and stuff but then later turn it into biblical reference about Adam and Eve.
Note: You should have a written speech by Thursday which lasts up to 4-5 minutes long. If you don't have it, it's fine, but try to start working on it!
The thing about impromptu is that, practice makes perfect. Mr. Nguyen explained that impromptu is basically getting a topic and delivering it well and having the judges buy it; sort like a salesman. Practicing for impromptu helps you to become a better orator and is a useful skill in society that might even help you land a job one day. Who knows, all these things that you learn for speech in Acadec will help you in one way or another eventually within your academic life as well as social life.
Wednesdays meeting has been rescheduled to THURSDAY for this week only due to President and Vice- President as well as other members of the club not being able to attend due to LA county fair.
Well, we are deciding to get a club apparel such as a T-shirt, jacket, or sweater and YOUR opinion is really important as we are trying to satisfy everyone. There is a vote on the side as to whether you guys want a T-shirt, jacket, or sweater.
Friendly note: T-shirts will be the cheaper than jackets or sweaters, but they don't last as long. So choose wisely!
Please start thinking of designs for our clothes because we want it to look as nice as possible! Voting ends on October 2nd at 11:59 PM so vote!
As a refuge from the heat, Mr. Olivos is offering his room for use to practice on impromptu during lunch!
P.S: Sorry if my post isn't as ultra-pro as Teddy's ):
