Update for September 27th

Today we had Mr. Nguyen over as our guest speaker. He went over how to write our speech and how to choose a topic, and later we turned to practicing impromptu and getting tips for it.

The key thing for choosing a topic is find something you're familiar with or can relate to. In order to create a good speech, you should be able to manipulate the topic into an abstract form.
For example, if you're going to talk about an apple, you can talk about it's appearance and stuff but then later turn it into biblical reference about Adam and Eve.

Note:
You should have a written speech by Thursday which lasts up to 4-5 minutes long. If you don't have it, it's fine, but try to start working on it!

The thing about impromptu is that, practice makes perfect. Mr. Nguyen explained that impromptu is basically getting a topic and delivering it well and having the judges buy it; sort like a salesman. Practicing for impromptu helps you to become a better orator and is a useful skill in society that might even help you land a job one day. Who knows, all these things that you learn for speech in Acadec will help you in one way or another eventually within your academic life as well as social life.

Wednesdays meeting has been rescheduled to THURSDAY for this week only due to President and Vice- President as well as other members of the club not being able to attend due to LA county fair.

Well, we are deciding to get a club apparel such as a T-shirt, jacket, or sweater and YOUR opinion is really important as we are trying to satisfy everyone. There is a vote on the side as to whether you guys want a T-shirt, jacket, or sweater.

Friendly note: T-shirts will be the cheaper than jackets or sweaters, but they don't last as long. So choose wisely!

Please start thinking of designs for our clothes because we want it to look as nice as possible! Voting ends on October 2nd at 11:59 PM so vote!

As a refuge from the heat, Mr. Olivos is offering his room for use to practice on impromptu during lunch!

P.S: Sorry if my post isn't as ultra-pro as Teddy's ):

Update as of September 22nd

So today was a meeting for impromptu and speaking. We practiced the art of thinking fast, and communicating our thoughts. We have practiced impromptu with different random topics.

A thing to know about competition day: The impromptu section is part of the speech section of the grading. So if you have a bit of trouble in impromptu, your prepared speech can help you!
The topics will be a bit more serious also. But, you probably will still be able to enjoy yourself!

For impromptu, please try to practice at home. Practice in front of a mirror. Hopefully, you're reading this update when you have maybe 15 minutes of spare time. And actually, one impromptu only takes about 4 minutes. Get your thinking strategies down at home. Then, when you get to school, you would work out your nervousness and staying calm and presenting yourself. That sounds like a plan! (:

For Topics, I just found this out today.
1. Go to demidec.com. Log in.
2. Click "Download Files".
3. Filter it to 2009. Filter it to SPEECH.
4. Then look for Three Category Impromptus. And they give you many many topics. Joy!

Otherwise, you can do "the effects of ________" and just pick a random thing. And impromptu it. Then, do it in front of your brother! Your Sister! Your dog! Time yourself.

There's supposed to be a meeting tomorrow at lunch tomorrow. No afterschool meeting.
Yup!

After the First Week. Read Please!

Update as of September 15th

Meetings are in room A208, Mr Olivos' room. If you haven't been coming, they are on Mondays and Wednesday, afterschool.

Today, we went over a few things.
So it looks like we're going to try to be selling boba at the next food faire of October 21st. Come support and buy something! :D We are still trying to look for different things to sell to, so keep be on the lookout! Money will go into shirts (which we still need a design for) and Academic Decathlon Camp? Maybe

Grapes of Wrath. Get it. Library, or buy it! Then, read it. I'm almost done with mine, someone can borrow it when I'm done.

We are currently working on Econ, and pretty soon we're going to go into Speech. So have a speech topic. Everyone needs to write one and probably needs to read/ perform it pretty soon. I'M SERIOUS! We're looking for MLK status speeches! Well, almost. Here are some sample speeches (found by my sister, Jessica Tea), take a look. But if not, we're probably going to do it in class.

OR post something :O

Last year at banquet, I felt pretty destroyed. I, myself, didn't do so good and I had to eat the savoring chicken breast and the steamed potatoes and the creamy ice cream, in shame. :(
Haha, but it's okay! Because there's a lot of room for Improvement!
So this year, my ultimate goal is to rise to the level of Mark Keppel and Alhambra. And at the least, I kinda want to get Most Improved for the team. This year, I'm going to eat good ice cream, and I'm going to feel good! Hopefully, you guys will find your motivations also!

And remember, you guys are OVERFLOWING with awesomeness. It's like a waterfall except instead of water, it's awesome. Yeah, it's a good thing.
